La ville du roman noir est une ville de mort. Qui donc y a assassiné l'urbanité ? Voilà la question à la fois tragique et lyrique, qui hante tout le "polar". De Hammett à Montalban, en passant par Irish et Malet, chaque école mène l'enquête à sa manière. A chaque fois, c'est tout un imaginaire social qui se révèle, dans son effort pour maîtriser symboliquement la réalité désordonnée de la grande ville industrielle. Ainsi naissent les mythes urbains fascinants du polar, jusqu'à ce que l'acceptation de la civilisation urbaine vienne en tarir la source. Conduire une telle étude, c'est faire parler le roman noir : le citer abondamment, et obtenir ses aveux sur son discours urbain. Encore faut-il que l'investigation sociologique respecte les spécificités littéraires du polar. C'est ce que tente de faire Jean-Noël Blanc, qui est sociologue à l'École d'Architecture de Lyon, et par ailleurs romancier et nouvelliste. |
