Long description: Das vorliegende Buch zeigt exemplarisch auf, welch schöne Schauplätze die Mathematik zu bieten hat und trachtet danach, diese Faszination auch der Leserschaft zuteil werden zu lassen, womit es sich vorzüglich für Vertiefungen im Mathematikunterricht an Gymnasien sowie für (Pro-)Seminare oder Ergänzungsvorlesungen an Universitäten eignet. Im Zusammenhang mit Potenzsummen, Quaternionen, Gustostückerln der linearen Algebra sowie einer (zwar elementaren) Behandlung der Theorie der algebraischen Gleichungen der Grade 2 bis 4 (jedoch unter der Lupe) bildet die Algebra den Beginn, ... ... woran die Geometrie mit reizvollen Themen wie der Geometrie des Fußballs, der Dreiecksgeometrie, Ergänzungen zur Vektorrechnung, einer vertieften Behandlung von Kreis(linie) und Ellipse sowie räumlichen Varianten des Lehrsatzes von Pythagoras anschließt. alle von Grund auf erarbeitet werden) ausführlich behandelt werden. Darin sind Bogenlängen-, Flächeninhalts- und Volumsberechnungen sowie der Krümmungsbegriff, Evoluten und Kurvenscharen inkludiert. Mit der Kreismethode von Descartes wird eine Alternative zum klassischen Differentialquotienten erörtert, numerische Integration paradigmatisch (samt Fehlerabschätzungen und interessanter Beispiele) anhand der Kepler- bzw. Simpson-Regel betrieben sowie die Eulersche Zahl und Eulersche Formel von einem neuen Blickwinkel aus betrachtet. Schließlich wird noch der Frage nachgegangen, wie die Eulersche Zahl eigentlich in die Hyperbelfunktionen kommt, was in einer reizvollen Mischung aus Abbildungsgeometrie und Analysis kulminiert. Fast 150 Abbildungen auf zirka doppelt so vielen Seiten veranschaulichen die dahintersteckende Mathematik und unterstreichen deren (schon in abstrakter Form vorliegende) Schönheit noch zusätzlich. |

|
In health and medicine, imagining the future is essential in giving meaning to the past and the present and for propelling people into action. This is true not only at the level of individuals as they envision and carry out everyday activities and long-term plans but also for institutional practices framed by and unfolding within various socio-political ecologies and transfigurations. Hope and uncertainty are critical affective and knowledge-related modalities of such imaginations and assume vital meanings in policing, managing, and experiencing health, illness, and well-being. This volume brings together contributions from medical anthropologists who address this theme across various medical spheres, including the pragmatics of hope and uncertainty, the techno-sphere, health management, and individual and socially distributed emotions. |
