• Sommario/riassunto: Francis of Assisi (1181/82-1226) was one of the most vibrant and colourful personalities in the Middle Ages. The life of this remarkable reformer of the medieval Church was celebrated in art, drama, poetry, music, the new vernacular literature and architecture. His ideal was to ; enter into a restorative and enriching relationship with Jesus Christ, whom he wished to imitate in the most perfect manner, a direct and immediate goal which captured the contemporary imagination. This Companion explores the life of Francis of Assisi and his enduring legacy throughout the centuries. The first part concentrates on his life and works whilst the second explores the way in which his heritage influenced the apostolic activities of his followers in the century following his death. • Sommario/riassunto: Der Band vereinigt Studien der letzten 20 Jahre zu deutschen und lateinischen Texten aus Mittelalter und Früher Neuzeit. Sie entstammen Gattungen, die in den vorausgehenden Büchern des Autors zum Nibelungenlied, zum Minnesang und der höfischen Epik weniger thematisiert wurden: außernibelungische Heldenepik, Novellistik, Geistliches Spiel, Narrensatire, Prosaroman, Enzyklopädie. Gemeinsam ist die Frage nach der Literarizität von Texten in einer Zeit, in der es allenfalls Ansätze zu einer Ausdifferenzierung eines relativ selbständigen Systems ,Literatur' gibt. Die Vormoderne ist durch einen anderen Literaturbegriff geprägt. Literarische Texte erfüllen pragmatische Funktionen (etwa die Narrenliteratur im Kontext von Sozialdisziplinierung), literarische Kommunikation ist in nicht-literarische kulturelle Praktiken eingebettet (etwa das Geistliche Spiel in den religiöse Kult), Wissensliteratur und fiktionale Texte sind nicht scharf getrennt (etwa Roman und historia). Zu diskutieren sind deshalb auch der zeitgenössische Literaturbegriff, seine theoretischen Grundlagen und medialen Voraussetzungen. Insofern sind die Studien alle theoriegeleitet, jedoch stets einzelfallbezogen. Sie verstehen sich als exemplarische Beiträge zu einer mediävistischen Kulturwissenschaft, die im literarischen Text zentriert ist, diesen aber nach seiner Einbettung in größere Kontexte befragt.
