Juan Bautista Alberdi, né en Argentine en 1810, mort en France en 1884, fut un acteur engagé, un témoin lucide et un fin analyste de la longue et difficile marche vers l’indépendance argentine. Il vécut des longues années en France, d’abord comme représentant diplomatique, ensuite comme ambassadeur sans titres ni créances d’une conscience sud-américaine bien en avance sur son temps. Jean Jaurès, en visite en Argentine en 1911, lui rendit un hommage appuyé en affirmant que ses écrits appartenaient au trésor commun de l’esprit humain et qu’ils pouvaient côtoyer sans pâlir ceux de Tocqueville, Laboulaye, et même Montesquieu. Les pages de son livre Le crime de la guerre résonnent encore par leur pertinence et leur modernité. Entre autres mérites, il sut anticiper et dénoncer la dérive militariste qui marqua plusieurs pays d’Amérique du Sud. En 1844, ce penseur érudit et visionnaire formulait déjà un programme audacieux d’unité douanière, de monnaie unique et même d’une banque propre à la région latino-américaine. Dans le contexte commémoratif des bicentenaires des indépendances latino-américaines, des spécialistes de France et d’Argentine ont été réunis pour nous offrir dans Juan Bautista Alberdi et l’indépendance argentine. La force de la pensée et de l’écriture un livre essentiel pour comprendre l’originalité du processus de construction nationale après la rupture du lien colonial et pour saisir l’importance des efforts intellectuels qui ont rendu possible une telle entreprise. |
