Dieser Band untersucht durch zeitgenössische Texte überlieferte Beuten und ihre Verwendung, etwa für zusätzlichen Sold, gegen den Hunger oder für kollektive Erinnerungsbauten (Tempel, Theater, Triumphbogen, Säulen), und verortet sie in ihren historischen Kontexten. Dies rückt herkömmliche, und zum Teil irrtümliche, Trophäenvorstellungen in ein neues Licht. Es stellt sich heraus, dass die schnell vergängliche Tagesbeute ökonomisch eine Nebenrolle spielt. Die wichtigste Beute stellen die Gefangenen dar, oft ganze Völkerschaften, die sofort oder mittelfristig als Sklaven verkauft werden können. Ein weiterer Aspekt der Gier nach Beute liegt darin, den Hunger der Truppen zu meistern. Die Jagd nach Vorräten hatte besonders bei Caesar, Alexander und während der Kreuzzüge eine dominante logistische sowie strategische Bedeutung, die hier in ganz neuen Zusammenhängen gesehen wird. Als besonders bemerkenswerten clash of civilization stellt die Publikation die Burgunderbeute von 1476 in ihren gesamteuropäischen Kontext. |
For the first time, this book presents a comprehensive history of the spoils of war from Old Testament evidence of the Battle of Megiddo through the pre-Napoleonic period. It gives special consideration to the Burgundian Booty of 1476. Using contemporary texts, the author investigates the nature, use, and impact of war plunder, placing the subject in a larger historical perspective to shed new light on established notions about the spoils of war. |
