Sommario/riassunto

This critical analysis investigates the causes that brought about one of the most tumultuous periods in modern Egyptian history - the clashes between the Muslims and Copts during the 1970s. A unique retrospective, it features probing interviews with Egyptian intellectuals, writers, political and religious leaders, as well as common citizens from both the Muslim and Copt communities. Within a framework of economic, political and ideological factors, Nadia Ramsis Farah is able to synthesize a compelling portrait of a troubled national conscience in the face of religious strife.First pu

Sommario/riassunto

Educating children and adolescents in public schools about sex is a deeply inflammatory act in the United States. Since the 1980s, intense political and cultural battles have been waged between believers in abstinence until marriage and advocates for comprehensive sex education. In The Sex Education Debates, Nancy Kendall upends conventional thinking about these battles by bringing the school and community realities of sex education to life through the diverse voices of students, teachers, administrators, and activists. Drawing on ethnographic research in five states, Kendall reveals important differences and surprising commonalities shared by purported antagonists in the sex education wars, and she illuminates the unintended consequences these protracted battles have, especially on teachers and students. Showing that the lessons that most students, teachers, and parents take away from these battles are antithetical to the long-term health of American democracy, she argues for shifting the measure of sex education success away from pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection rates. Instead, she argues, the debates should focus on a broader set of social and democratic consequences, such as what students learn about themselves as sexual beings and civic actors, and how sex education programming affects school-community relations.

This book is open access under a CC BY license. The narrative of 20th-century medicine is the conquering of acute infectious diseases and the rise in chronic, degenerative diseases. The history of fungal infections does not fit this picture. This book charts the path of fungal infections from the mid 19th century to the dawn of the 21st century.

Sommario/riassunto

Sommario/riassunto

Enhancements to the forwarding process that support frame preemption are provided in this amendment to IEEE Std 802.1Q-2014. Scope: This amendment specifies procedures, managed objects, and protocol extensions that: - Define a class of service for time-critical frames that requests the transmitter in a bridged Local Area Network to suspend the transmission of a non-time-critical frame, and allow for one or more time-critical frames to be transmitted. When the time-critical frames have been transmitted, the transmission of the preempted frame is resumed. A non-time-critical frame could be preempted multiple times. - Provide for discovery, configuration, and control of preemption service for a bridge port and end station. - Ensure that preemption is only enabled on a given link if both link partners have that capability. Purpose: The purpose of this amendment is to provide reduced latency transmission for scheduled, time-critical

frames in a bridged LAN.
