While considerable progress has been achieved over recent decades in terms of gender equality, gaps remain. Women are still concentrated in the lower-paid sectors of the labour market and are under-represented in decision-making. The European Commission’s Strategy for Gender Equality lays down its programme in this area for 2010-15. The strategy sets out priorities including equal economic independence, pay, labour market opportunities and access to decision-making positions. It also stresses the need to promote women’s dignity and stop gender-based violence. The Strategy outlines EU efforts to integrate gender equality into its external actions regarding policies such as enlargement and development. Finally, it addresses horizontal issues including gender roles, the legislative framework and tools for promoting equality. [Abstract tratto dalla pubblicazione] |

Media and Politics in Pacific Asia is the first book to provide a detailed account of the political influences exerted by both domestic and international media in Pacific Asia. Duncan McCargo argues that the media are political actors and institutions in their own right, and that as such they can play a variety of political roles, some of which support processes of demographic transition and consolidation, and some which do just the opposite.Drawing on first-hand research in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan and Thailand - and employing comparative examples that include Burma, Mal |
