Das Reichsheer im Neusser Krieg wurde 1474/75 aufgeboten, um das von Herzog Karl dem Kühnen belagerte Neuss zu entsetzen. Es muss als eine der bemerkenswertesten politischen, organisatorischen und militärischen Leistungen des Reiches im 15. Jahrhundert angesehen werden. Der Band begreift das Reichsheer als soziales Gefüge und untersucht dessen Zusammensetzung, Funktionsweise und Verwurzelung in der Reichspolitik des 15. Jahrhunderts. Dabei werden erstmalig die umfangreichen Quellen zum Neusser Krieg systematisch ausgewertet. Die Heterogenität und Komplexität des Reichsheeres sowie die Präsenz der wichtigsten politischen Akteure des Reichsverbandes ließen das Neusser Aufgebot zum Spiegel des dezentral strukturierten spätmittelalterlichen Reiches werden.
