The Jesuit educational system, with its successful applications in all parts of the world for several centuries, is one of the most durable, influential, and far-reaching experiments in the history of education. In this monograph Aldo Scaglione explores the complex genesis of the system, which it regards essentially as a heritage of Renaissance Humanism; the impact of both Reformation and Catholic Counter-reformation on it; and its conflicts with the secular traditions and systems with which it competed through the centuries. |

Trois Français ont joué à des titres divers un rôle important aux côtés de l'empereur Ménélik (1889-1913) : Léon Chefneux, homme d'affaires, Casimir Mondon-Vidailhet, « agent officieux » du gouvernement français et Léonce Lagarde son premier représentant officiel. Ni la vie, ni l'oeuvre d'aucun de ces trois hommes n'ont à ce jour été l'objet d'études approfondies. Les papiers laissés par Lagarde et Chefneux n'ont pas été publiés et peu utilisés. Quant à Mondon-Vidailhet, il a disparu sans laisser de traces à en croire les auteurs d'un article paru en 1969 qui écrivaient : « Il semble donc que la personnalité de Mondon n'ait pas laissé de trace soit dans l'actualité, soit dans le monde scientifique ». Sa biographie était alors assez floue, son influence sur les événements du règne de Ménélik assez incertaine |

et ses oeuvres, pourtant nombreuses, suffisamment oubliées, pour que cette opinion ait semblé raisonnable. Les recherches relatives à Chefneux et à Lagarde sont au point mort. En revanche, l'utilisation de nouvelles données relatives à Mondon-Vidailhet (il s'agit principalement d'une note rédigée par son frère Stanislas) a permis d'obtenir depuis quelques résultats que l'on trouvera consignés dans ces lignes. Three French people played an important role at Menelik's side (1889-1913) : Léon Chefneux, a businessman, Casimir Mondon-Vidailhet, an unofficial agent of the French government, and Léonce Lagarde, its first official representative. The lives and works of these three men have not been studied in detail yet. The works of Lagarde and Chefneux have neither been published nor studied. No trace was found of Mondon-Vidailhet if we refer to an article published in 1969 which reads : "It seems therefore that Mondon's personality has not left much of a mark either in current events or in the scientific world".
