Constitué d’allers et retours permanents entre la France, point de comparaison plus que modèle, l’Italie et le monde, ce volume examine à partir des textes – au premier rang desquels les Cahiers de prison – certains de ses concepts les plus importants, à l’instar du jacobinisme ou du national-populaire et plusieurs de ses thématiques historiques, des Lumières à la Révolution française. Le livre explore aussi le volet politique et culturel de la pensée de Gramsci, lorsqu’il s’intéresse à l’Action française et à la pensée de Charles Maurras, au coup d’État manqué du général Boulanger ou aux épisodes de l’affaire Dreyfus. Mais en définitive, c’est bien toujours une double perspective, indissociablement européenne et internationaliste, qui est sous-jacente à cette « France de Gramsci ».
