Het hoofd van de stad werpt aan de hand van de figuur van de vooroorlogse burgemeester een nieuw licht op de relatie tussen bestuur en samenleving in Amsterdam tijdens het interbellum. Het interbellum was een periode waarin onder invloed van Haags ingrijpen de bestuurlijke speelruimte van de burgemeester werd verkleind, maar de burgemeester tegelijkertijd ook kansen en gelegenheden werden geboden om een nieuwe invulling aan zijn functie te geven en nadrukkelijker naar voren te treden op verschillende terreinen van het maatschappelijk leven dan tot dan toe gebruikelijk was.De Amsterdamse burgem |
