Au confluent de la guerre froide, de la décolonisation et du conflit israélo-arabe, la crise de Suez de 1956 tient une place particulière dans l’histoire des relations internationales depuis 1945. À ses acteurs principaux, Grande- Bretagne et France, associés dans une intervention militaire contre l’Égypte, l’historiographie a invariablement assigné des mobiles de politique étrangère ou coloniale : les Anglais voulaient préserver leurs positions dans le monde arabe et protéger leurs intérêts pétroliers ; les Français désiraient renverser Nasser, soutien essentiel des rebelles algériens.  S’agit-il donc, dans le cadre classique d’un affrontement entre nationalisme égyptien et impérialismes anglais et français, d’un retour étonnant et anachronique à la politique de la canonnière ? L’auteur démontre que les choix des deux gouvernements trouvent en réalité leurs raisons dans la politique intérieure au sens large, ressac conservateur de l’après-guerre en Grande-Bretagne et



crise de la IVe République en France. Son étude porte à la fois sur les développements internes dans les deux pays à partir de 1955 et sur leurs politiques égyptiennes, sans négliger les plans militaires et les considérations coloniales. Outre les abondantes sources secondaires, Jean-Yves Bernard utilise l’ensemble des archives publiques françaises et anglaises disponibles, les fonds des partis politiques, les archives personnelles et les témoignages oraux de plusieurs acteurs et contemporains des faits.
