Questo denso, vivacissimo "trattatello" uscì nel 1938 su un numero speciale della rivista torinese "Graphicus"; mai più ripubblicato da allora, si è perso anch'esso nell'oblio che ha avvolto l'eccentrica figura del suo autore, Ezio D'Errico. Eppure, poche volte è dato leggere pagine così efficaci sull'arte della stampa, che spieghino con altrettanta chiarezza l'empirismo tecnico che di volta in volta ne determina le regole, senza perdere mai d'occhio le innumerevoli implicazioni estetiche e culturali che il lavoro tipografico presuppone. In brevi capitoli tematici, Mistero dei caratteri compendia la storia della parola scritta dagli alfabeti inventati nelle antiche civiltà fino alle contemporanee questioni grafiche, accompagnando con estro di scrittura i riferimenti che si richiederebbero a una voce esauriente di enciclopedia, ma sempre toccando le ragioni sottili e fondamentalmente ‘astratte' che rendono bella una pagina stampata.

Mistero dei caratteri è un esempio assai rappresentativo delle idee che negli anni Trenta animavano, anche nell'Italia sotto il fascismo in pieno vigore, la ricerca formale di molte "arti applicate", la cui ‘modernità' è tuttora un rigoroso riferimento nelle magmatiche proliferazioni visive



del nostro tempo. Ancorché firmato insieme ad Edoardo Orecchia, cui spettava la cura tipografica di "Graphicus", Mistero dei caratteri è un titolo emblematico della stupefacente varietà d'interessi e del "multiforme ingegno" di Ezio D'Errico, a cui Sergio Polano dedica in questo libro un ritratto biografico articolato e partecipe [Testo dell'editore].
