Confronting Animal Abuse presents a powerful examination of the human-animal relationship and the laws designed to protect it. Piers Beirne, a leading scholar in the growing field of green criminology, explores the heated topic of animal abuse in agriculture, science, and sport, as well as what is known, if anything, about the potential for animal assault to lead to inter-human violence. He convincingly shows how from its roots in the Irish plow-fields of 1635 through today, animal-rights legislation has been primarily shaped by human interest and why we must reconsider the terms of human-animal relationships. Beirne argues that if violations of animals' rights are to be taken seriously, then scholars and activists should examine why some harms to animals are defined as criminal, others as abusive but not criminal and still others as neither criminal nor abusive. Abuse points to the need for a more inclusive concept of harms to animals, without which the meaning of animal abuse will be overwhelmingly confined to those harms that are regarded as socially unacceptable, one-on-one cases of animal cruelty. But so, too, do those other and far more numerous institutionalized harms to animals, where abuse is routine, invisible, ubiquitous and often defined as socially acceptable. Este livro procura identificar necessidades, detectar entraves e elaborar estratégias para garantia do exercício de direitos materno-reprodutivos no sistema prisional brasileiro. Por meio da observação de estabelecimentos prisionais, da realização de grupo focal com presas e de entrevistas com especialistas, as autoras puderam identificar, no fluxograma do sistema de justiça, os entraves e as lacunas que impedem detentas de terem seus direitos efetivados; mapear a percepção de mães presas do tratamento jurídico-penal-social que lhes é concedido e granjear suas propostas para realização do exercício da maternidade na condição adversa em que se encontram. resultado da pesquisa, foram elaboradas trinta propostas sobre desencarceramento, convivência familiar e fluxo do sistema de justiça, se não para diminuir a população prisional feminina, pelo menos para reduzir as violações de direitos e as consequências do aprisionamento. Die oberschlesische Abstimmungszeit nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg bildet ein dunkles und blutiges, bislang in der deutschen Öffentlichkeit zudem weitgehend unbekanntes Kapitel der deutsch-polnischen Vergangenheit. Das Plebiszit sowie die drei oberschlesischen Aufstände in den Jahren 1919–1921, die in der Aufteilung des Gebietes zwischen Deutschland und Polen mündeten, führten in Deutschland zu einer außerordentlich hitzigen, polemischen und polarisierten Debatte. In der vorliegenden Publikation, die zum hundertsten Jahrestag des oberschlesischen Abstimmungskampfes erscheint, analysiert der Autor die Zeit des oberschlesischen Plebiszits aus der Perspektive der liberalen deutschen Reichspresse. Der Verfasser wendet sich damit einer speziellen Quellenart zu, die bei der Erforschung der Thematik bislang stets vernachlässigt und kaum berücksichtigt wurde: Noch nie zuvor wurde die Haltung der deutschen liberalen Tagesblätter gegenüber der oberschlesischen Abstimmungszeit ergründet. Urbanik legt eine detaillierte, akribische Analyse von Presseberichten über die ausschlaggebenden Ereignisse in Oberschlesien aus den Jahren 1919–1921 vor. Auf diese Weise erinnert er nicht nur an ein dunkles Kapitel deutsch-polnischer Geschichte, sondern präsentiert auch völlig neue Erkenntnisse, die das Wissen über die damaligen Vorgänge nachhaltig bereichern und vervollständigen. |
