Fondata nel 580 a.C. da abitanti della colonia rodio-cretese di Gela, Akragas divenne presto la città siceliota più importante dopo Siracusa, insieme alla quale inflisse una dura sconfitta ai Cartaginesi nel 480 a.C. Nei decenni successivi alla storica battaglia di Himera, lungo le mura meridionali della città venne costruita la maggior parte di quei grandiosi templi che hanno talmente colpito l’immaginazione di visitatori e studiosi da dare il loro nome all’intera area archeologica. Ma storia e archeologia della Valle dei Templi non si esauriscono certo in essi, né nel periodo della loro costruzione.
