Sommario/riassunto

This book chronicles the challenges, truths, and lessons of teaching and leading in a traditional high school today: the bureaucratic red tape, the fight for inclusivity, the mental health and safety concerns, and the urgent need for teacher support and wellness. From active shooter drills to digital distractions, from closing achievement gaps to preserving educator autonomy, the challenges are immense—but so are the opportunities for change. With an honest and insightful perspective, the authors share their compelling narrative account from their extensive experiences in the trenches as both a cautionary tale and a call to action—challenging educators, policymakers, and communities

to rethink how schools can truly serve students and those who teach them. Teresa L. Sullivan, a distinguished Massachusetts principal, led Abington High School to a 2018 US DOE Blue Ribbon. With a PhD in Educational Leadership and Public Policy from UMass and a Leadership and Communication credential from Harvard, she now provides educator training full-time. She has several academic publications including with the 7th International Conference for Innovative Research in Education in France. Kim McHugh has been an English teacher at Abington High School for 25 years and earned her administrator licensure in 2020. She has presented locally at the English Language Arts Collaborative Workshop at Bridgewater State University and nationally at the Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Convention. Kim’s greatest contributions to the field are grounded in building relationships with students that promote intellectual rigor and cognitive engagement for ALL students. Laura Louko is a highly experienced educator and K-12 Curriculum Coordinator based in Massachusetts with a strong commitment to empowering students and fostering their academic growth. She has also served as a professional development presenter locally and nationally on topics including literacy, school culture and climate, closing the achievement gap and equity in education.
