Sommario/riassunto

Plant-based biomass resources, including cereals, crop residues, seed of oil crops, sugar crops, forage crops and various woody crops, can be converted to several of bio-products through physical, chemical and biological conversion methods. Although the components of different plant-based raw materials are varied, there are four main compounds: carbohydrate (sugar, starch, cellulose and hemicellulose), lignin (poly-phenol), esters and protein. This new and important book aims to analyze the common problems of the conversion process of plant-based products starting with the key problems of the complexity of the plant-based raw materials, the âeoeprocess integrationâe of process engineering, and the âeoestructure and functionâe of product engineering. The concept of âeoeplant-based products process engineeringâe is advanced based on the integration of multidisciplinary knowledge, and the system of multilevel conversion is expatiated from the three areas: raw materials, conversion process and product development. These afford a theoretic and technologic support

for development of plant-based products process engineering. This book also introduces the key technology platforms for plant-based products process engineering, the main approaches for using these platforms to achieve a multilevel utilization of plant-based raw materials, and the constitution of a novel mode for the ecological industry of plant-based products.

Sommario/riassunto

This book discusses the importance of plants in terms of their natural bioactive products and medicinal, nutraceutical and health benefits. Plants are natural sources of many pharmaceutical compounds used in traditional and modern medicine, and their mass production and efficient use is imperative in view of the new emerging diseases. This book covers breakthroughs in the research of plant natural products by focusing on how different state-of-the-art biotechnologies facilitate their discovery, the molecular basis of their biosynthesis, as well as synthetic biology. Research on plant's natural products in the pre-genomic era was focused on discovering bioactive molecules with pharmaceutical activities, and identifying individual genes responsible for biosynthesis. In the post-genomics era, however, integration of inter-disciplinary approaches and detailed analysis of all accessible data from multi-informatics is necessary. This would accelerate the full characterization of biosyntheticand regulatory circuit for producing plant natural products. This book is an important reference book for the researchers working in the field of plant natural products and pharmaceutical industries at global level.
