• Sommario/riassunto: In the research on "The transformation of the Roman world" relatively little attention has been paid to the transformation of early medieval peoples and the development of their communities into kingdoms, and we lack a comparative study on this subject. The aim of this volume is, therefore, to examine the relationship between gens and regnum by systematically comparing the "Germanic" and non-Germanic successor states of the Roman Empire, a question that leads to important results about the role of ethnic processes and of political developments in the formation of the new kingdoms. By trying to answer leading questions, 16 authors (historians, archaeologists and linguists) deal with ten important kingdoms of this period and with their political and legal context (role of the Empire and the law-codes). An introduction to the subject and its inherent problems and a comparative conclusion summarizing the results completes the volume. • Sommario/riassunto: Der oftmals kontrovers beurteilte Kardinal und Staatsmann Richelieu hat die Geschichte Frankreichs nachhaltig geprägt und über seinen Tod hinaus tiefe Spuren in der Geschichte Europas hinterlassen. Klaus Malettke legt nach jahrzehntelanger Forschung zu Richelieu und dessen Epoche eine neue, umfassende Biographie vor. Leben und Agieren des Menschen, Theologen und Staatsmannes behandelt der Autor in seinen ; positiven wie kritischen Aspekten. Einen breiten Raum widmet der Verfasser dem außenpolitischen Handeln des „Prinzipalministers“ Richelieu in der Phase des „offenen Krieges“ von 1635 bis 1642. Malettke beleuchtet insbesondere die Vorstellungen des Staatsmanns über die Gestaltung eines umfassenden Friedens in Europa und dessen dauerhafte Bewahrung durch die Verwirklichung eines Systems kollektiver Sicherheit. Aber auch die von Richelieu und seinen Gefolgsleuten entfaltete propagandistische Öffentlichkeitsarbeit sowie sein Wirken als Mäzen weiß der Autor kenntnisreich zu schildern. Nicht weniger Aufmerksamkeit gilt Richelieus Klientelpolitik sowie seinen vielfältigen und weitgespannten Aktivitäten beim Aufbau des eigenen großen Vermögens. Dabei ist es Klaus Malettke immer wichtig zu rekonstruieren, welche Prinzipien und Kategorien damals das Handeln Richelieus und der anderen Akteure bestimmten – wie Dynastie, Konfession, Staatsinteresse, Staatsräson und Tradition.
