J. Robert Oppenheimer è una delle figure più enigmatiche e influenti della fisica del Novecento. In un’epoca che è stata generosa di menti geniali e di elaborazioni teoriche rivoluzionarie, Oppenheimer non è stato solo un grande scienziato, ma, con il suo incarico di direttore del Progetto Manhattan e quindi di referente dello sviluppo della bomba atomica, divenne il simbolo di una scienza che, dalle paradossali astrattezze della meccanica quantistica, fu in grado di ricavare l’«arma definitiva», siglando la fine del secondo conflitto mondiale e consegnando all’umanità la responsabilità e l’incubo di una possibile distruzione totale.
