Sommario/riassunto

Who are the rural poor? Where do they live? What challenges does poverty pose in thier respective localities? Answers to these questions are the basis for an effective rural development strategy.; The rural poor include the landless, individuals and households with few assets, smallholders, pastoralists, rural women; and ethnic minorities and indigenous populations. Thus, the rural poor are not a homogenous group. Understanding the needs of such different groups is central to the success of the World Bank's new strategy.; This book aims to

revitalize World Bank activities in rural areas by adjusting the strategic framework and formulating a programme of concrete and attainable actions. The strategy calls for raising the profile of rural development efforts and extending Bank endeavours to reach the rural poor. The strategy: focuses on the rural poor; fosters broad-based economic growth; addresses all rural areas; forges alliances of all stakeholders; and addresses the impact of global developments on client countries.
