Si l'esthétique classique a promu le « je ne sais quoi », difficile à définir et expliquer précisément, mais dont la grâce peut conduire au sublime, peut-être Balzac a-t-il élevé au titre de grand art moderne et mis au cœur de sa création un « je ne sais quoi de romanesque [...] qui sied aux âmes exaltées ». Le présent volume, dirigé par Jacques-David Ebguy et Christelle Girard, s'attache à comprendre, au-delà de la tension traditionnelle entre roman réaliste et roman romanesque, la notion même de « romanesque », aussi fascinante que délicate à circonscrire.
