Die Geburt eines Kindes stellt eine Vielzahl von Anforderungen an die Frauen - Erschöpfung, Stillen, Schlaflosigkeit, Wiederherstellung der normalen Körperfigur, Verringerung des Geschlechtstriebes und Wegfall sozialer Beziehungen. Betrachtet man diese innerhalb nur kurzer Zeit stattfindenden biologischen, sozialen und emotionalen Veränderungen, ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass es in der Zeitspanne von der Geburt bis zur Rückbildung aller Schwangerschaftsveränderungen eine Reihe verschiedener psychiatrischer Störungen auftreten können.
