In der NS-Propaganda galt das Lager Theresienstadt, nördlich von Prag gelegen, als »jüdisches Siedlungsgebiet«. Tatsächlich ist es aber eine Zwischenstation zur Deportation in die Vernichtungslager gewesen. Schwer vorstellbar, aber es gab dort, im Wartesaal des Todes, über zwei Jahre eine Fußballiga auf hohem Niveau und mit großen Zuschauerzahlen.Das von der jüdischen Selbstverwaltung im Lager organisierte Kultur- und Sportleben lässt sich nicht als eine der NS-Propaganda genehme Ablenkungsaktion abtun. Überlebende betonten immer wieder, dass Fußballspielen oder Zuschauen einen »Augenblick der Menschlichkeit« darstellte, in dem sich alle als Individuen fühlen konnten.Der in seiner Heimat als Institution geltende Sportjournalist František Steiner (1925–2013) hat unter Mitarbeit von Zeitzeugen ein ebenso berührendes wie ermutigendes Buch über die Geschichte des Fußballs im Lager Theresienstadt verfasst.
