Initié à la peinture et à la perspective par son père peintre de décors de théâtre, le vénitien Giovanni Antonio Canal, dit Canaletto (1697-1768), fut essentiellement reconnu pour ses vedute. Tandis que les amateurs de son temps ramenaient ses paysages comme témoignages de leur voyage en Italie, Canaletto devint l'incarnation de la Sérenissime baroque.
