New reproductive technologies now enable parents to select some genetic traits for their children, and soon it will be possible to begin to shape ourselves as a species. Despite the loud cries of alarm that such a prospect inspires, Ronald Green argues that we will-and we should-undertake the direction of our own evolution. A leader in the bioethics community, Green offers a scientifically and ethically informed view of human genetic self-modification and the possibilities it opens up for a better future. Fears of a terrible Brave New World or a new eugenics movement are overblown, he maintains, and in the more likely future, genetic modifications may improve parents' ability to enhance children's lives and may even promote social justice. The author outlines the new capabilities of genomic science, addresses urgent questions of safety that genetic interventions pose, and explores questions of parenting and justice. He also examines the religious implications of gene modification. • Sommario/riassunto: "L'une des conséquences de la guerre du Péloponnèse a été le développement d'une politique navale à grande échelle de la part de deux puissances terrestres : Sparte et la Confédération béotienne. À l'époque de leurs hégémonies respectives (404-371 et 371-362 av. J.-C.), elles ont dû se tourner vers la mer pour contrer le pouvoir qu'Athènes y exerçait, en mettant ainsi fin à la répartition ancrée dans les esprits entre la puissance sur terre (Sparte) et la puissance sur mer (Athènes). Cette nécessité a conduit Sparte et la Béotie à s'adapter à ce nouveau contexte : la surveillance des lieux stratégiques et la guerre navale étaient désormais au cœur de leurs préoccupations. L'ouvrage propose d'examiner les modalités d'adaptation entre les contraintes liées à une puissance terrestre et la mise en place d'une politique navale. Quelles ressources en argent, en hommes et en matériaux étaient nécessaires pour la construction et l'entretien d'une flotte et de ports militaires ? Quels étaient la disposition et l'aménagement des sites urbains à proximité de la mer ? Quel était leur rôle dans le développement de la navigation ?
