Sommario/riassunto

During his thirty years with the Institute of Child Study of the University of Toronto the late Dr. Karl S. Bernhardt wrote hundreds of articles and gave hundreds of talks to parents on the best way to bring up children. His philosophy is based on a belief in the worth of the individual. He believed that the goal of child-rearing should be to develop a feeling of security in the individual, and the best way to develop this sense of security is with firm and consistent discipline. This volume brings together some of Dr. Bernhardt's articles. It examines all aspects of child-rearing: the importance of the home and the family, and the influence on the child's development exerted by both the home and the school. He describes the stages of child development, discipline problems, character education, the use of leisure time and the

development of mental health.Written in a style which is simple and direct, this book is a guide for family living with a timely message for today's parents.

Sommario/riassunto

Sommario/riassunto

This Brief introduces engineers to the main principles in ethics, research design, statistics, and publishing of human subject research. In recent years, engineering has become strongly connected to disciplines such as biology, medicine, and psychology. Often, engineers

(and engineering students) are expected to perform human subject research. Typical human subject research topics conducted by engineers include human-computer interaction (e.g., evaluating the usability of software), exoskeletons, virtual reality, teleoperation, modelling of human behaviour and decision making (often within the framework of ‘big data’ research), product evaluation, biometrics, behavioural tracking (e.g., of work and travel patterns, or mobile phone use), transport and planning (e.g., an analysis of flows or safety issues), etc. Thus, it can be said that knowledge on how to do human subject research is indispensable for a substantial portion of engineers. Engineers are generally well trained in calculus and mechanics, but may lack the appropriate knowledge on how to do research with human participants. In order to do high-quality human subject research in an ethical manner, several guidelines have to be followed and pitfalls have to be avoided. This book discusses these guidelines and pitfalls. The aim is to prepare engineers and engineering students to carry out independent research in a responsible manner.

Sommario/riassunto

Known as Madame de Villedieu, Marie-Catherine Desjardins (ca. 1640-83) was a prolific writer who played an important role in the evolution of the early modern French novel. One of the earliest women to write for a living, she defied cultural convention by becoming an innovator and appealing to popular tastes through fiction, drama, and poetry. Memoirs of the Life of Henriette-Sylvie de Molière, a semi autobiographical novel, portrays an enterprising woman who writes the story of her life, a complex tale that runs counter to social expectations and novelistic conventions. A striking work, the story skillfully mixes real events from the author's life with fictional adventures. At a time when few women published, Villedieu's Memoirs is a significant achievement in creating a voice for the early modern woman writer. Produced while the French novel form was still in its infancy, it should be welcomed by any scholar of women's writing or the early development of the novel.
