Proclamant la liberté de la presse et du commerce, la Révolution délivre l'imprimerie et la librairie du carcan de l'Ancien Régime. Dans la vaste province de Bretagne, le livre se « démocratise » en rompant brutalement avec le passé et les premiers journaux départementaux voient le jour. Le régime napoléonien porte un coup d'arrêt à la concurrence débridée de la décennie révolutionnaire et instaure un lourd système de contrôle de l'imprimé, qui va perdurer après la chute de l'Empire. Le commerce du livre connaît pourtant une nouvelle phase de développement sous la Restauration. Librairies et cabinets de lecture se multiplient dans toute la province, tandis qu'à Nantes la presse prend son essor. En 1830, au terme d'un demi–siècle où se sont succédés quatre régimes politiques différents, l'écart entre la Basse et la Haute-Bretagne s'est accentué. À l'aube de la révolution industrielle,



c'est à Nantes et à Rennes que l'édition s'engage sur la voie de la modernité, tout en contribuant à l'affirmation d'une identité bretonne.
