The new digital technologies can change the ways we interact with our patients and the treatments we provide. This chapter discusses the ethical, clinical, legal, and practical aspects of such technologies as email, videoconferencing, teletherapy, Internet therapy videophone, Twitter, and Facebook, especially in the age of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). It examines not only the new opportunities (e.g., providing therapy to someone in another state or province) but also the risks (e.g., especially in the area of privacy, confidentiality, and breaches of clinical data) and responsibilities (e.g., |
