Essays in the main chosen from among the papers submitted in a competition conducted by the American psychological association in 1921 for the most meritorious research on the effects of music.  The prize-winning study, on The sources and nature of the affective reaction to instrumental music, was submitted by Professor Margaret F. Washburn and G. S. Dickinson. The laboratory reports of the Edison-Carnegie music research, conducted by W. V. Bingham with the assistance of Dr. Max Schoen and Dr. Ester L.
