« L’ai-je vu ou ne l’ai-je pas vu ? », telle était, selon Jacques Tourneur, la réaction qu’aurait dû engendrer le démon de Rendez-vous avec la peur (1957), si seulement le film avait pu échapper aux velléités bassement commerciales de son producteur. À partir de semblables déclarations et d’analyses souvent justes mais toujours incomplètes, les critiques comme les universitaires ont réduit l’esthétique du cinéaste à un art de la suggestion, à une expérience herméneutique. Pourtant, sa démarche cherche aussi à impliquer physiquement le spectateur dans la fiction, grâce à diverses stratégies énonciatives, tant sonores que visuelles, qui visent toutes à le mettre directement en danger. Pour Tourneur, la peur façonne à chaque instant tout être humain, ce qui explique l’omniprésence de ce sentiment dans son œuvre, même en dehors des genres ou cycles - le fantastique et le film noir - où il se manifeste par essence. Dans un jeu de miroirs complexe, les personnages principaux et leurs opposants l’éprouvent et le provoquent : ils rejoignent ainsi un cercle de la peur dont nul n’est jamais tout à fait exclu. Une lecture détaillée de trois films (Vaudou, Rendez-vous avec la peur et The Fearmakers) vient clore le volume et s’efforce de cerner, en le légitimant, le fonctionnement de la peur. |
