• Sommario/riassunto: Many histories of Ancient Greece center their stories on Athens, but what would that history look like if they didn't? There is another way to tell this story, one that situates Greek history in terms of the relationships between smaller Greek cities and in contact with the wider Mediterranean. In this book, author Joshua P. Nudell offers a new history of the period from the Persian wars to wars that followed the death of Alexander the Great, from the perspective of Ionia. While recent scholarship has increasingly treated Greece through the lenses of regional, polis, and local interaction, there has not yet been a dedicated study of Classical Ionia. This book fills this clear gap in the literature while offering Ionia as a prism through which to better understand Classical Greece. This book offers a clear and accessible narrative of the period between the Persian Wars and the wars of the early Hellenistic period, two nominal liberations of the region. The volume complements existing histories of Classical Greece. Close ; inspection reveals that the Ionians were active partners in the imperial endeavor, even as imperial competition constrained local decision-making and exacerbated local and regional tensions. At the same time, the book offers interventions on critical issues related to Ionia such as the Athenian conquest of Samos, rhetoric about the freedom of the Greeks, the relationship between Ionian temple construction and economic activity, the status of the Panionion, Ionian poleis and their relationship with local communities beyond the circle of the dodecapolis, and the importance of historical memory to our understanding of ancient Greece. The result is a picture of an Aegean world that is more complex and less beholden narratives that give primacy to the imperial actors at the expense of local developments.

• Sommario/riassunto: Il faut attendre l'entre-deux-guerres pour que l'artisanat soit reconnu par les pouvoirs publics comme une catégorie à part entière, avec l'instauration d'un statut fiscal et du crédit artisanal, avec la création des chambres des métiers et du registre des métiers. Dès lors les prémices d'une politique artisanale, qui prendra toute sa dimension dans les années 70, peuvent voir le jour. C'est l'analyse de l'influence de cette politique sur l'évolution de l'artisanat entre 1938 et 1970 qu'a choisi d'étudier Cédric Perrin. En 1938, l'artisanat est un secteur dynamique dont la croissance est fondée sur la mobilité sociale et géographique. Plus tard Vichy glorifie les artisans dans sa propagande mais cette période est avant tout un temps de pénuries, notamment de main d'oeuvre, de crédit et de matières premières. Après la Libération, l'artisanat vit une grave crise qui impose une modernisation. À l'écart des priorités économiques de la Nation, les artisans se sentent abandonnés : ils voient leurs impôts s'alourdir alors que le crédit se restreint. À partir de la fin des années 1950, l'État réintègre ce secteur dans sa politique économique avec une commission de l'artisanat au Commissariat général du Plan : l'assistance technique se développe, le ; crédit et la fiscalité artisanale sont réformés. Les progrès sont nets sans toutefois être à la hauteur des besoins. À travers le prisme de l'artisanat, Cédric Perrin apporte un éclairage nouveau sur l'histoire de l'industrialisation française ainsi que sur le rôle économique de l'État pendant et après la seconde guerre mondiale. « Au total, le livre conteste l'idée d'un déclin de l'artisanat et explique sa survie par son dynamisme interne plus que par l'aide (très relative au regard d'autres secteurs comme l'agriculture) qu'il a reçue de l'État. » Michel Lescure.
