Che cos'è l'ideologia e da dove proviene questo concetto oggi così familiare e allo stesso tempo tanto denigrato? Il volume ne offre una definizione individuandone l'origine nella nozione di “finzione”. Esaminando alcuni autori considerati particolarmente significativi quali Spinoza, Locke e Vico, risulta chiaro che la costruzione di “idee finte”, piuttosto che stabilire i limiti della conoscenza umana, permette di trovare nuove forme di interpretazione della realtà e dunque immaginare nuovi modi di agire su di essa. Senza una concezione positiva della finzione, perciò, non sarebbe stato possibile pensare la storia, non solo come oggetto di una nuova scienza, ma neanche come prospettiva della costruzione di un futuro per la nostra specie. Costruire il futuro, però, vuol dire anche “rappresentarselo” con idee coerenti e appropriate, ed è così che il concetto di ideologia prende il suo posto tra gli strumenti che l'umanità ha creato per trovare soluzioni, altrimenti inimmaginabili, ai problemi che la storia le presenta.
