In Flesh and Fish Blood Subramanian Shankar breaks new ground in postcolonial studies by exploring the rich potential of vernacular literary expressions. Shankar pushes beyond the postcolonial Anglophone canon and works with Indian literature and film in English, Tamil, and Hindi to present one of the first extended explorations of representations of caste, including a critical consideration of Tamil Dalit (so-called untouchable) literature. Shankar shows how these vernacular materials are often unexpectedly politically progressive and feminist, and provides insight on these oft-overlooked-but nonetheless sophisticated-South Asian cultural spaces. Die Iberische Halbinsel und Lateinamerika gelten nicht als Kernländer neugotischer Kirchenbaukunst. Dennoch überraschen sie mit einer vielfältigen Rezeption gotischer Architektur, und gerade auf dem südamerikanischen Kontinent erheben sich wohl mehr neugotische Sakralbauten des 19. bis 21. Jahrhunderts als irgendwo anders. Aber es gibt dort auch zahlreiche Sakralbauten, bei denen sich historisierende und modernistische Elemente verbinden - die Sagrada Familia in Barcelona ist dafür das bekannteste, aber keineswegs einzige Beispiel.Die Autoren liefern Einblicke in eine von der Kritik weitgehend unbeachtete, aber dennoch extrem präsente Baukultur vom Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts bis heute.Pese a que ni la península ibérica ni América Latina se consideren regiones centrales de la arquitectura sagrada neogótica, ambas sorprenden con una variada recepción de tal estilo. De hecho, el lugar donde existen más edificios religiosos de este tipo, de los siglos XIX al XXI, es Sudamérica. Abundan por doquier, además, en ambas zonas, los edificios sagrados que combinan elementos historicistas y modernistas; la Sagrada Familia, en Barcelona, es el ejemplo más conocido, pero no es, de ninguna manera, el único de este fenómeno. Los autores aportan datos sobre una tradición de arquitectura apenas tratada por la crítica, pero profusamente usada desde finales del siglo XVIII hasta nuestros días. |
