Die Humanontogenetik betrachtet die menschliche Individualentwicklung von der Konzeption bis zum Tode. Sie versucht dabei, das Individuum als biopsychosoziale Einheit zu erfassen. Das vorliegende Buch vom ganzen Menschen gibt erstmals eine umfassende Einführung in die Grundkonzepte, Probleme, Fragen und Methoden der Humanontogenetik. Als Inter-Disziplin umfasst und integriert sie die Entwicklungsaspekte aller Humanwissenschaften und wirkt wiederum auf diese zurück. Damit dient die Humanontogenetik sowohl als kritische Theorie als auch als Forschungs-programm, um die Komplexität der Individuen in ihrer strukturellen wie auch zeitlichen Dimension zu verstehen. Das Buch wendet sich an Studenten, Wissenschaftler und Praktiker aus der Medizin, der Gerontologie, der Pädagogik, der Sportwissenschaft, der Humanbiologie, der Pflegewissenschaft, der Psychologie und anderen Humanwissenschaften, aber auch an den interessierten Laien. Karl-Friedrich Wessel, geb. 1935 in Hamburg, begann seine Laufbahn als Berufsschullehrer und studierte anschließend Philosophie und ; Theoretische Physik an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Dort wurde er 1968 im Fach Philosophie mit einer Studie über den Kritischen Realismus promoviert und im Jahr 1975 mit einer Arbeit über Philosophie und Pädagogik habilitiert. 1977 wurde er auf den Lehrstuhl für Philosophische Probleme der Naturwissenschaften berufen und war von 1990 bis 2000 Gründer und Leiter des Interdisziplinären Instituts für Wissenschaftsphilosophie und Humanontogenetik. Gegenwärtig ist er wissenschaftlicher Leiter des Projektes Humanontogenetik an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und Vorsitzender der Gesellschaft für Humanontogenetik.
