Sommario/riassunto

A radical new analysis of how and why Spain and its empire survived during the reign of the last Spanish Habsburg, Carlos II (1665-1700). As Storrs makes clear, the survival of the Spanish empire in this period was not wholly due to the aid of its new-found allies: in fact, it was a state and society more clearly committed to the retention of empire - and more successful in achieving this - than historians have generally acknowledged.
