Als kulturelle Größe Münchens führte die einst berühmte Autorin Carry Brachvogel (1864–1942 in Theresienstadt) in Zeiten großer Umbrüche emanzipiert und erfolgreich das Leben einer Vorreiterin: berufstätig, bewusst alleinerziehend, jüdisch. Brachvogel trug als Gründerin und tragende Figur des Münchner Schriftstellerinnenvereins maßgeblich dazu bei, der Autorentätigkeit auch als Frauenberuf Anerkennung zu verschaffen. Ihr literarischer Salon in Schwabing erlangte mit Gästen wie Rainer Maria Rilke oder Lou-Andreas Salomé weit über die Stadtgrenzen hinaus Bekanntheit. Mit dem erzwungenen Rückzug ins Private und dem Publikationsverbot für Juden ab 1933 gerieten Carry Brachvogel und ihr Werk in Vergessenheit. Erst in den letzten Jahren werden ihre Romane und Erzählungen wiederentdeckt und neu veröffentlicht. Die Historikerin Judith Ritter widmet sich Leben, Werk und Identität dieser modernen Schriftstellerin, die die Frauen schon 1911 zur Selbstbestimmung ermutigte: „Modern sein heißt für die Frau, ein eigenes Gesetz in der Brust tragen.“ |
The once famous author Carry Brachvogel (1864–1942) led the life of a successful and emancipated pioneer among the cultural greats of Munich during a period of great upheaval – she was employed, a single mother, and Jewish. Historian Judith Ritter presents the life, work, and identity of this modern female writer, who was already promoting women’s self-determination in 1911: "For a woman, to be modern means following your own personal law." |
