• Sommario/riassunto: Den zeitlichen Rahmen dieses Bandes bilden zwei Abreisen aus Jena. Anfang Juli 1795 tritt Humboldt eine Reise nach Berlin an, die zwar nur für wenige Wochen geplant war, die sich aber zu einem Aufenthalt von rund 16 Monaten ausdehnte, weil er bei der Ankunft die Mutter todkrank vorfand. Der Band schließt mit der Abreise Humboldts von dort im Juni 1797, dem Antritt einer lange geplanten Reise über Dresden und Wien nach Italien, die aber kriegsbedingt von Wien nach Paris führte. Der Mittelpunkt des Bandes ist aber nicht etwa Berlin, von wo die Mehrzahl der Briefe abgeschickt wurde, sondern Jena, wohin sehr viele adressiert waren. Die Briefe, die Humboldt an seinen Freund Schiller aus Berlin und Tegel schrieb, bilden eine schriftliche Fortsetzung jener Gespräche philosophischen und literarischen Inhalts, ; die die beiden bis zu Humboldts Abreise so gut wie täglich geführt hatten. Das überragende Thema dieser Episteln war in den ersten Wochen der Druck von Schillers „Musenalmanach auf das Jahr 1796" beim Berliner Verleger Unger, den Humboldt zu überwachen hatte. Ein weiteres Hauptthema war die Rezeption von Schillers seit Januar 1795 erscheinenden Zeitschrift „Die Horen" beim Berliner Publikum. Eine längere Reise durch Norddeutschland wird im Spätsommer 1796 dazwischen geschoben, bei der er in Eutin mit Johann Heinrich Voss Bekanntschaft schließt und in Hamburg den alten Freund Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi wiedersieht. Diese Korrespondenz lebt jetzt wieder auf. Eine weitere Korrespondenz, die mit dem Hallenser Gräzisten Friedrich August Wolf, wird fortgesetzt. Der Band enthält darüber hinaus eine Reihe bisher ungedruckter Briefe an den Berliner Verleger Vieweg. Humboldts Freund Friedrich Gentz, dessen „Deutsche Monatsschrift" bei Vieweg erschien, hatte Bankrott gemacht, und diese Briefe bezeugen den verzweifelten Versuch Humboldts und weiterer Freunde, dessen finanziellen Ruin abzuwenden. Der Band schließt mit einer Reihe z. T. sehr interessanter Briefe an seine Frau Karoline aus der Zeit unmittelbar vor dem Aufbruch zur vermeintlichen Italienreise.; This volume focuses on Friedrich Schiller, who leaves Humboldt in mid-1795 "for a few weeks" that turn into 16 months after Schiller finds his mother mortally ill in Berlin. The two men continue by letter the philosophical conversations they had been conducting in Jena on a near-daily basis. Many of the c. 170 letters in this volume, written before Humboldt left Jena in 1797, are also addressed to Goethe, C. G. Körner, Jacobi, and F. A. Wolf.
