En 1905, l’administrateur colonial Paul Gillotte est chargé par le gouverneur général de l’Algérie d’accompagner des pèlerins algériens jusqu’à Djeddah, le port de La Mecque. Dans le rapport qu’il rédige à cette occasion, l’administrateur consigne soigneusement tous les événements intervenus à bord, à l’aller comme au retour. Mais, bien plus qu’un simple journal, Gillotte nous a laissé un véritable reportage sur l’organisation du pèlerinage à La Mecque à l’époque ottomane. Il consulte la presse, les archives du consulat de France, interroge des témoins, rencontre des personnalités locales. Pendant la traversée et lors de son séjour au Hedjaz, Gillotte a également pris un centaine de photographies – reproduites dans cet ouvrage – qui constituent un témoignage précieux sur l’histoire du pèlerinage à La Mecque et les circulations en Méditerranée et en mer Rouge au début du XXe siècle. |
