Im Spätsommer 1916 trafen hoch über London deutsche Zeppeline als die ersten Langstreckenbomber der Geschichte auf die Jagdflugzeuge der britischen Armee und Marine. Die Luftkämpfe von 1916 markieren den Höhepunkt und den Anfang vom Ende des ersten strategischen Bombenfeldzuges. Frederik Gerhardt beschreibt, wie u. a. die rasche Entwicklung der Luftfahrt dazu führte, dass man nunmehr in der Lage war, Produktionsstätten, Verkehrswege und Zivilbevölkerung anzugreifen. In Deutschland als Wunderwaffe gefeiert, wurden die Zeppeline in England aufgrund der Bombardierung von Zivilisten, Frauen und Kindern als sogenannte "Baby Killers" aufs Schärfste verurteilt. Die Luftangriffe trugen zusammen mit dem Einsatz von Giftgas bei Ypern und der Versenkung des Passagierdampfers Lusitania wesentlich dazu bei, das Bild der Deutschen als "barbarische Hunnen" zu formen. |
