• Sommario/riassunto: Die Studie beschäftigt sich mit Literatur unter Bedingungen von Kritik. Sie zeigt, wie kritische und literarische Kommunikation seit dem 17. Jahrhundert aufeinander reagieren, wie eine eigensinnige kritische ; Haltung etabliert wird und wie mit dieser neuen Kritikfähigkeit die Verunsicherung der Akteure steigt. Zu den Strategien, mit denen Autoren und Leser auf die Unsicherheit kritischer Kommunikation reagieren, gehört dabei insbesondere eine bestimmte Form der Aufmerksamkeit: Sie bildet die Grundlage für die Bereitschaft, Werke ebenso genau wie umfassend zu beobachten und sich von möglichen Mängeln nicht irritieren zu lassen. Auf diese Weise zeigt die Studie auch, dass aus der kritischen Kommunikation die Philologie entsteht, dass Literatur und Literaturwissenschaft kooperieren und dass ihre Geschichten zusammengehören. Wie komplex die Muster kritischer Kommunikation angelegt sind, wird in Detailstudien zu einer Reihe großer Werkpolitiker entwickelt: Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, Ludwig Tieck, Johann Wolfgang Goethe und Stefan George.
