Valladolid est sans doute, en ce siècle où l'Espagne joue un rôle majeur en Europe, l'une des premières cités de Castille par son importance démographique et économique. Mais son cas est en outre exemplaire : l'étude de ses possibilités de développement et des contraintes qui l'inhibent, de ses idéaux et de ses préjugés nous apprend autant sur la Castille que sur elle-même. La nouveauté du livre réside dans la description d'une société de consommation sans frein, de style ostentatoire, à une époque où le « modèle seigneurial » est imité de larges fractions de la population. Tel est le défi au conditions du siècle et, en définitive, le drame de la Castille. * « L'enquête menée par Bartolomé Bennassar n'est certes pas une orpheline, héritière qu'elle est et débitrice de grands travaux qui ont permis de connaître la Castille du XVIe siècle plus intimement, sans doute, que la France de la même époque.
