• Sommario/riassunto: The Twelve Years Truce of 9 April 1609 made a temporary end to the hostilities between Spain and the Northern Netherlands that had lasted for over four decades. The Truce signified a crucial step in the recognition of the Republic of the Northern Netherlands as a sovereign power. As the direct source of inspiration for the 1648 Peace of Munster the Truce is a crucial text in the formation of the early modern law of nations. As few other texts, it reflects the radical changes to the laws of war and peace from around 1600. The Twelve Years Truce offers a collection of essays by leading specialists on the diplomatic and legal history of the Antwerp Truce of 1609. The first part covers the negotiation process leading up to the Truce. The second part collects essays on the consequences of the Truce on the state of war. In the third part, the consequences of the Truce for the sovereignty of the Northern and Southern Netherlands as well as it wider significance for the changing laws of war and peace of the age are scrutinised.

• Sommario/riassunto: La contingencia, o sea, todo lo que no es necesario ni imposible, remite a un hecho epistemológico fundamental: lo que los seres humanos perciben depende de sus perspectivas y de sus sistemas de referencia. Respecto a la ética conlleva problemas de legitimización, ya que amenaza al ser humano con la arbitrariedad y la indiferencia moral al destruir cualquier fundamento sólido para justificar o aplicar normas sociales. El presente volumen recoge las contribuciones de un Congreso Internacional celebrado en Passau en mayo de 2021 y plantea cómo los textos ficcionales del siglo XX y, sobre todo, del XXI —la literatura, el teatro y las artes audiovisuales— brindan (o no) normas éticas cuando representan, por su forma o por su contenido, la contingencia y sus aporías morales. El enfoque yace especialmente en el manejo de la contingencia en el contacto con el extranjero; contacto marcado por la diversidad cultural y, muchas veces, por una multitud de desafíos dilemáticos. Por ello, las contribuciones indagan también sobre la posición de la ficción frente a un compromiso moral. Los análisis se restringen a experiencias vinculadas a los encuentros con el extranjero, sean a través de personas o de lugares, sean voluntarias (viaje, migración) o forzadas (exilio), siempre y cuando se trate de experiencias con la otredad cultural con todo lo que implican de contingente. También se preguntan por la relación entre texto y lector: ¿cuál es su papel para manejar la contingencia que los textos ficcionales hacen patente?
