• Sommario/riassunto: Bis zum Mauerbau 1961 verließen jährlich Hunderttausende von Menschen die SBZ und DDR in Richtung Westen. Vorliegendes Buch zeigt, dass die Machthaber in Ostberlin dieses Problem erst Anfang der 1950er Jahre ernst nahmen. Die Erfolglosigkeit fast aller Maßnahmen gegen die Republikflucht basierte auf der in der DDR weit verbreiteten Unzufriedenheit mit der politischen Lage im Land. Viele Menschen nutzten die offene Grenze, um politischen, persönlichen, familiären und wirtschaftlichen Problemen durch den Ortswechsel weitgehend konfliktlos zu entfliehen.Ein ausführlicher Dokumententeil gibt Auskunft über Zu- und Abwanderungszahlen, Gesetze, Grenzsicherung und -kontrollen Artikel aus ostdeutschen Zeitungen und Zeitschriften dokumentieren die Abwanderungsmotive aus Sicht der DDR und SED, Abschiedsbriefe und private Briefe geben ein beredtes Zeugnis für die Fluchtgründe der persönlich Betroffenen.
