Roads to Power tells the story of how Britain built the first nation connected by infrastructure, how a libertarian revolution destroyed a national economy, and how technology caused strangers to stop speaking. In early eighteenth-century Britain, nothing but dirt track ran between most towns. By 1848 the primitive roads were transformed into a network of highways connecting every village and island in the nation-and also dividing them in unforeseen ways. The highway network led to contests for control over everything from road management to market access. Peripheries like the Highlands demanded that centralized government pay for roads they could not afford, while English counties wanted to be spared the cost of underwriting roads to Scotland. Arthur Schnitzlers 1897 entstandene Erzählung Der Ehrentag führt ein Motiv aus, das mehrfach in seinen Notizen erscheint: das des vermeintlichen oder inszenierten Ruhms. bestellten Applaus empfangen und bejubelt, woraufhin er sich aus Scham erhängt. Diese Alltagstragödie gehört zu dem Stoffkomplex des gescheiterten Talents, an dem sich Schnitzler im Frühwerk abarbeitete. Verhakt mit einer Nebenhandlung von Eifersucht und Trennung, wurde der Text mit vier weiteren novellistischen Studien, die Variationen des Themas ,Abschied' bilden, 1898 im Sammelband Die Frau des Weisen veröffentlicht. Die Historisch-kritische Ausgabe präsentiert das nachgelassene Manuskript faksimiliert in Originalgröße mit den entsprechenden Transkriptionen. Der integrale Text folgt dem Erstdruck in der Zeitschrift Die Romanwelt; er wird ergänzt durch einen Variantenapparat bis zur Ausgabe letzter Hand sowie einen kultur- und sprachhistorischen Kommentar. Entstehungs- und Druckgeschichte werden ausführlich dargestellt. Auf diese Weise lässt sich die Genese des Textes nun erstmals zur Gänze nachverfolgen. |
