Le colloque à l'origine de cet ouvrage était consacré à la fabrique de l'histoire des premiers temps de Rome (vie-iiie siècles avant J.-C.). Cette initiative avait essentiellement été inspirée par la conviction des deux organisateurs, Bernard Mineo et Thierry Piel, qu'une approche purement positiviste des textes historiques antiques condamnait l'historien moderne à ne pas comprendre réellement la nature de l'information qui lui était transmise. La très grande pauvreté des sources dont disposaient les Anciens pour évoquer l'histoire la plus reculée de Rome avait de fait conduit ces derniers à s'inspirer, pour le |

fond comme pour la forme, de modèles prestigieux, ceux qu'offraient l'environnement international et notamment le monde grec. Les premiers récits littéraires évoquant l'histoire de la Rome archaïque sont tardifs, puisqu'il faut attendre la deuxième moitié du IIIe siècle av. J.-C. pour les voir apparaître. Ils prennent alors des formes diverses, poétiques (avec les épopées de Naevius et d'Ennius) ou prosaïques (avec les ʽPωμαίων Πράξεις de Fabius Pictor). Ces récits ne sortent pas du néant. Ils résultent en effet de plusieurs facteurs historiques que l'équipe de chercheurs réunis à l'occasion de ce colloque se sont attachés à définir. |
