Dans la "Vienne 1900", Carl Menger (1840-1921), le fondateur de l'École autrichienne d'économie politique, a renouvelé la conception de l'économie (valeur, capital, monnaie), mais aussi la théorie de la connaissance et la philosophie de la nature humaine. Appuyées sur des archives récemment exhumées au Japon et aux États-Unis, les contributions rassemblées ici présentent des sources de sa pensée (Aristote, les Lumières, entre autres), certains aspects de sa théorie et de sa méthodologie qui débordent le champ économique, et leur impact sur quelques œuvres postérieures (chez Max Weber, Karl Polanyi et Eugen v. Böhm-Bavverk).  Ces concepts constituèrent-ils alors une doctrine, une Mengerlehre? La question se pose aujourd'hui car ils peuvent servir une tâche d'actualité, puisque la crise économique actuelle s'accompagne d'une crise de la pensée par maints aspects analogue à celle connue alors. Il est donc urgent de les retrouver.  International (France, Autriche, Italie) et pluridisciplinaire (philosophie, économie, sciences politiques), le projet coordonné par Gilles



Campagnolo, responsable français de l'édition des oeuvres de Menger, a débouché sur ce colloque tenu à l'université de Provence qui a fait date. Le lecteur trouvera également la seule traduction française intégrale de l'article « On the Origin of Money » (initialement paru dans The Economic journal en 1892).
