Cet ouvrage dresse le portrait de bandits « bien de chez nous », la Bande noire qui a terrorisé les populations rurales de nombreux villages du Hainaut, du Brabant et du Namurois au milieu du XIXe siècle. Grâce à un mode opératoire bien ficelé, ces criminels ont su jouer pendant plus de cinq ans avec les failles d'un système judiciaire fragile, avant de se faire arrêter et juger. Au même moment, la Belgique connait une autre affaire de banditisme qui fera couler beaucoup d'encre : l'affaire « Coucke et Goethals », du nom de ces deux Flamands jugés et guillotinés à Charleroi pour un crime que certains membres de la Bande noire revendiqueront ensuite. Les archives judiciaires et journalistiques ont permis de reconstituer cette histoire passionnante où se côtoient bandits, acteurs judiciaires, habitants des villes et des campagnes, sur fond de débats idéologiques qui ont façonné l'histoire de la Belgique au XIXe siècle. Autant d'éléments qui devraient permettre à l'affaire de la Bande Noire de retrouver sa place dans l'histoire politique et judiciaire de la société belge. |
