Hidalgo, gentleman, officier, letrado, yeoman ou croquant, les sociétés anglaise, française et espagnole du xviie siècle sont riches de figures sociales héritées des siècles précédents. Mais cette période d’affirmation de l’État, de tour de vis fiscal, de pestes, de famines et de développements des villes est également traversée par des bouleversements sociaux massifs. De Don Quichotte aux précieuses, des bourgeois gnetilshommes aux picaros, des élégants cavaliers de Van Dyck aux costumes sombres des nobles castillans, la littérature et la peinture ont élévé au rang d’archétype les types sociaux nés des mutations des sociétés du xviie siècle. Une vingtaine d’universitaires français et étrangers ont été sollicités pour écrire, en dix-huit chapitres et quatre parties, cette étude comparative des sociétés anglaise, espagnole et française au xviie siècle.
