La Corte dei conti europea ha esaminato gli obiettivi e le realizzazioni di 27 progetti di infrastrutture di trasporto in porti marittimi, selezionati in maniera casuale, che erano stati cofinanziati tra il 2000 e il 2006 attraverso il Fondo europeo di sviluppo regionale e il Fondo di coesione. La Corte ha rilevato che solo 11 dei 27 progetti hanno sostenuto in maniera efficace gli obiettivi della politica in materia di trasporti. Inoltre, la realizzazione di alcune opere previste dai progetti non era stata completata, alcune infrastrutture non erano utilizzate e altre richiederanno ulteriori cospicui investimenti prima di poter essere utilizzate in maniera efficace. La relazione della Corte adduce diverse ragioni per spiegare quanto constatato e formula alcune raccomandazioni per ovviare alle carenze riscontrate, in modo da migliorare in futuro l'impiego di fondi UE a favore dei porti marittimi.
