bouleversements, du « tournant républicain » de l'historiographie nord-américaine, à la fin des années 1960, à l'approche « euro-américaine » assumée par l'histoire ibéro-américaniste au cours des années 1990 dans son approche des Indépendances. Dans une perspective comparée, il convient maintenant de faire le point sur la rupture à la fois politique et culturelle qui saisit l'espace atlantique au cours du siècle de la transformation moderne. De la guerre de Sept ans (1763) aux grandes réformes libérales du milieu du xixe siècle et à la Guerre de Sécession américaine (1865), la fin de la domination impériale aux Amériques va de pair avec l'adoption des formes politiques modernes : gouvernement républicain (hormis le Brésil et Haïti), souveraineté nationale, citoyenneté, Etat de droit, gouvernement représentatif. Les travaux rassemblés ici décrivent de manière originale l'effondrement des empires atlantiques en Amérique et l'accession à la modernité politique des nouveaux États. Ils interrogent en effet les grands récits qui en organisent habituellement la compréhension comme la construction de la nation ou le triomphe du libéralisme. Ils relativisent, en outre, la différence entre le Nord et le Sud du continent américain, signalant des points de contact ou de correspondance entre les États-Unis, les républiques hispano-américaines, Haïti et le Brésil.
